Pieces Of Reallity más fuerte, diverso y personal
Su segundo trabajo es toda una declaración de intenciones. Han aprendido de su disco debut «Mad Hatter» (2018), así que han regresado con las lecciones aprendidas y sobre todo con ganas de seguir creciendo y aprendiendo que es a la postre lo que hace grande a una banda y a lo que hacemos en la vida en general.
Tuvimos la suerte de entrevistar a Petter Hjerpe (Voces) para que nos desvelara sus secretos y porque este disco ha significado un paso adelante en su carrera.
1. Segundo álbum después de dos años de espera. ¿Ha pasado mucho tiempo?
El primer año está dedicado al primer álbum para que los fanáticos puedan escucharnos y saber quiénes somos.
El segundo año comenzamos a escribir nuevas canciones y discutir cómo deberíamos seguir adelante con el proceso de grabación, etc. Así que dos años es un momento natural para nosotros. ¡Y pasaron dos años realmente rápido!
2. Se dice que el segundo hijo siempre es mejor, gracias a la experiencia del primero. Podríamos aplicar lo mismo, después de este «Pices of Reality»
Sí estoy de acuerdo. No es necesariamente mejor, pero nos sentimos más seguros de cómo resolver las cosas y resolver diferentes situaciones en el estudio o la composición de canciones. Creo que este álbum tiene más personalidad y es más fuerte que el primero gracias a la experiencia del primero, como dijiste.
3. ¿Qué crees que has mejorado tu debut «Mad Hatter» (2018)
Confianza en la composición de canciones. También grabamos este álbum por nosotros mismos sin contratar un estudio y productor. Eso nos dio más tiempo para experimentar con las canciones y grabar cuando alguna vez nos sentimos de buen humor. Si tienes un mal día, puedes saltarte la grabación ese día porque no tienes ninguna presión para grabar. Eso ayuda a que la composición se sienta más relajada. Entonces, la mayor mejora en este álbum es que obtuvimos los detalles que queríamos en las canciones.
3. Me gustaron mucho los coros de ópera «Master Of The NIght». ¿De quién fue la idea de incluirlos y por qué?
Tuve la idea de los grandes coros. Los coros ayudaron a que la canción se sintiera más caótica, románica y dramática. A Dennis (guitarras) se le ocurrió la idea de cómo construir cosas. Magnus (bajo) es un buen vocalista, así que se le ocurrió el melodio del coro y grabó la mitad de las partes de los coros. ¡Entonces es trabajo en equipo!
4. A veces parece que todo está inventado en la música. ¿Qué hacen ustedes como músicos para reinventarse?
Tengo más experiencia como vocalista, por ejemplo. Prefiero tocar la guitarra en realidad. Pero aprendí a cantar porque no conocía a nadie más que cantara este rey de la música en vivo. Así que tuve que cantar para completar las canciones que escribí. Entonces aprendo más sobre cómo usar mejor mi voz cada vez que grabo. Practico la voz a poco. Entonces, cuando grabo una idea o una canción, esa es casi la única vez que canto. Eso para mí es una especie de reinvetación.
5. Hay dos canciones que tienen una introducción muy llamativa, con efectos y teclados de los 80, al menos es la sensación que me transmiten, son «Pieces Of Reality» y «Awake». ¿Era algo que estabas buscando o fue algo natural?
A veces escribo canciones jugando con diferentes sonidos de teclado. Se escribieron dos canciones con los teclados como punto de partida. Luego se me ocurrió todo lo demás mientras seguía escribiendo. Las introducciones del teclado fueron las originales y luego el resto de los instrumentos crecieron a partir de eso.
6. Me gusta mucho la canción «The Valley», especialmente esa guitarra acústica desde el principio y luego esa sección con acústica nuevamente y aplausos, brillante. Un sonido muy español, de la zona de Sevilla. Pero el cambio en la introducción con la guitarra acústica y cuando entra el resto de la banda, ¿lo encontré muy abrupto? ¿Cuál es tu opinión? ¿Podría haberse hecho mejor?
¡Gracias! En realidad, la canción no tenía introducción al principio. Se nos ocurrió esta canción cuando estuvimos en España en Gineta Rock 2018. Nos sentamos en la habitación del hotel y jugamos por diversión. Hablamos de Zelda -Ocarina of time (Nintendo 64) y hablamos de Gerudo Valley. La música para ellos para esa etapa fue impresionante. Así que escribimos una canción inspirada en eso. Cuando grabamos la canción, quería agregar una introducción acústica porque si escuchas el tema del valle de Gerudo, también tienes una breve introducción. Entonces por eso.
7. ¿Cómo definirías este nuevo álbum en pocas palabras?
Más grande, diverso, poderoso y más personal que el primero.
8. ¿Tienes una canción favorita sobre otra?
Hm, es difícil de decir. ¡Porque cuando escribes y luego grabas las canciones que las escuchas tanto que casi pierdes el rastro de lo que realmente son! Pero recuerdo que cuando escuché la mezcla terminada, disfruté más de «Master Of The NIght» y «Collector of souls». Mabye «The Valley» porque se destaca con esa parte acústica.
9. Uno de los puntos fuertes del álbum es la vitalidad que transmite, no solo por el estilo, sino también porque has logrado canciones muy animadas, con cambios y arreglos de ritmo vertiginosos. Por ejemplo, en el último «I´ll Save The World», de esas canciones que te invitan a saltar y dejarte llevar, con algunos teclados geniales. ¿Cuéntanos sobre esta canción que cierra el álbum?
Quería escribir una canción que tuviera ese tempo de 3/4. Primero escribí las partes del teclado que escuchas en la introducción. Entonces quería que la canción siguiera presionando. No perder tempo. Así que traté de que cada parte de la canción fuera interesante y llena de energía. Luego, las letras se basan en un libro llamado «Armada». Se trata de un niño que juega videojuegos, simuladores de vuelo, y luego se dio cuenta de que están controlando drones de combate reales y luchando contra alienígenas de verdad. Buena historia.
10. Me encantó la portada. y el nombre «Pieces Of Reality»». ¿Por qué este nombre? ¿Lleva el proceso creativo entre todos ellos o hay alguien que esté a cargo de las letras y otros de la música?
¡Gracias! ¡Realmente pinté la obra de arte yo mismo! ¡Entonces es realmente agradable escuchar que a la gente le gusta!
Escribí todas las letras para que puedas decir que estoy a cargo. Pero Dennis, por ejemplo, tiene un papel importante en el proceso de producción y mezcla y está «a cargo» de esa parte.
11. El covid19 es una noticia que afecta a los músicos en general. ¿Cómo están todos, familiares, amigos? ¿Cómo ves el futuro de la música en general y de la banda?
Sí, es una gran cosa! Pero aquí en Suecia, o en el pequeño pueblo donde vivo, lo hemos hecho bastante bien. El país está «abierto» y solo tiene algunas restricciones. Como mantener la distancia y lavarse las manos, etc. Así que si vivo, todos están bien. Puedes ir a la tienda, ir a trabajar o salir a caminar. Pero con respeto y distancia.
Pero no hay conciertos ni conciertos en ningún lado. Así que es difícil crecer como banda si lo miras. Nosotros como banda necesitamos mostrarnos en línea para llegar a los fanáticos. ¡Difundir nuestra música o hacer algunos videos y mostrarles que somos una banda viva!
12. ¿Algo que agregar a nuestros lectores en España?

Pieces of reality stronger, more diverse and personal
His second job is a statement of intent. They have learned from their debut album «Mad Hatter» (2018), so they have returned with the lessons learned and above all with the desire to continue growing and learning that dessert is what makes a band great and what we do in life usually.
We were lucky to interview Petter Hjerpe (Vocals) to reveal his secrets to us and because this album has a step forward in his career.
- Second album after two years of waiting. Has it been long?
The first year is dedicated for the first album so fans get a chans to listen to us and get to know who we are.
The second year we started to write new songs and discuss how we should move on with the recording process etc. So two years is a natural time for us. And two years went by really fast!
- It is said that the second child is always better, thanks to the experience of the first. We could apply the same, after this «Pices Of Reality»
Yes, I agree. Not necessary better but we feel more confident of how to work things out and solve different situations in the studio or songwriting. I do think this album has more personality and is stronger than the first thanks to the experience of the first, as you said.
- What do you think you have improved your debut «Mad Hatter» (2018)
Confidence in songwriting. We also recorded this abum by our selves without hiring a studio and producer. That gave us more time to experiment with the songs and record when ever we felt in a good mood. If you have a bad day you mabye skip recording that day becouse you don’t have any pressure that you have to record. That helps the songwriting feels more relaxed. So the biggest improvment on this album is that we got the details we wanted in the songs.
- I really liked the very operatic «Master Of The NIght» choirs. Whose idea was it to include them and why?
I had the idea of the big choirs. The choirs helped the song feel more Cathedralic,b ombastic and dramatic. Dennis(guitars) came up with the idea of how to build things up. Magnus(Bass) is a good vocalist so he came up with the melodi of the chorus and recorded half the parts of the choirs. So it is team work!
- Sometimes it seems that everything is invented in music. What do you as musicians do to reinvent yourself?
I get more experienced as a vocalist for example. I prefer to play guitar actually. But I learned to sing becouse I didn’t know anyone else who sang this king of music were I live. So I had to sing to complete the songs I wrote.
So I learn more how to use my voice better every time I record. I practice vocals to little. So when I record an idea or a song that is almost the only time I sing. That for me is a kind of reinvetation.
- There are two songs that have a very striking introduction, with effects and keyboards from the 80’s, at least it is the feeling that they transmit to me, they are «Pieces Of Reality» and «Awake». Was it something you were looking for or did it come naturally?
Sometimes I write songs just playing around with different keyboard sounds. Thoes two songs were written with the keyboards as a starting point. Then I came up with everything else as I kept writing. The keyboard intros were the original and then the rest of the instruments grew from that.
- I really like the song «The Valley», especially that acoustic guitar from the beginning and then that section with acoustic again and clapping, brilliant. A very Spanish sound, from the Seville area. But the change in the intro with the acoustic guitar and when the rest of the band comes in, did I find it very abrupt? What is your opinion? Could it have been done better?
Thank you! Actually the song had no intro in the beggining. We came up with this song when we were in Spain at Gineta Rock 2018. We sat at the hotel room and just played around for fun. We talked about Zelda -Ocarina of time(Nintendo 64) and talked about Gerudo Valley. The music them for that stage was awsome. So we wrote a song inspiried from that. When we recorded the song I wanted to ad an acustic intro becouse if you listen to the Gerudo valley theme you have a short intro as well. So that is why.
- How would you define this new album in a few words?
Bigger, diverse, powerfull and more personal than the first.
- Do you have a favorite song over another?
Hm, it’s hard to say. Becouse when you write and then record the songs you listen to them so much you almost loose track of what they really are! But I remember when listening to the finnished mix I enjoyed «Master of the night» and » Collector of souls» the most. Mabye » The Valley» becouse it stands out with that acustic part.
- One of the strong points of the album is the vitality that it transmits, not only for the style, but also that you have achieved very lively songs, with dizzying rhythm changes and arrangements. For example in the last «I´ll Save The World», of those songs that invite you to jump and get carried away, with some great keyboards. Tell us about this song that closes the album?
I wanted to write a song that had that 3/4 tempo. I first wrote the keyboard parts you hear in the intro. Then I wanted the song to just keep on pushing. Not loosing tempo. So I tried to get every part of the song intressting and filled with energy. Then the lyrics are based on a book called «Armada». It’s about a boy who plays video games, flight simulators, and then he realised that they are controling real fighter drones and fighting aliens for real. Cool story.
- I loved the cover art. and the name «Pieces Of Reality». Why this name? Do you carry the creative process among all of them or is there someone who is in charge of the lyrics and others of the music?
Thanks! Actually I painted the artwork my self! So it’s really nice to hear people like it!
I wrote all the lyrics so you can say I am in charge. But Dennis, for example, have a big role in the producing and mixing process and is «in charge» of that part.
- The covid19 is a news that affects musicians in general. How are everyone, family, friends? How do you see the future of music in general and of the band?
Yeah, it’s a big thing! But here in Sweden, or in the small town I live, we have made it quite good. The country is «open» and have just some restrictions. Like keepin distance and washing hands etc. So were I live everyone is fine. You can go to the shop, go to work or take a walk outside. But with respect and keeping distance.
But there are no concerts or gig anywhere. So it’s hard to grow as a band if you look at it. We as a band need to show our selves online to reach the fans. Spread our music or making some videos and show them we are a living band!
- Something to add to our readers in Spain?
In Spain we feel like we have the biggest fan-base and it is thanks to you guys we exist and keep on writing music we love! You are the best! Keep safe and stay strong in this time of Covid19 and I hope that we someday will se ya on the road!
