Irdorath nos dejo una gran sensación con su nuevo álbum «Collapse«, una vuelta a los orígenes del estilo y porque no en su vertiente más cruda, lo que siempre se agradece en estos tiempos de demasiados teclados y orquestas, que si bien también se disfrutan, de vez en cuando recordar la vieja escuela nos mantiene vivos.
Un disco que te llena de inicio a final y el cual analizamos a fondo en la web y que para rematarlo, tuvimos la suerte de entrevistar a Markus, nada más y nada menos que su vocalista y guitarrista.
1. ¿Qué significa este quinto álbum para ti?
M .: Hola Paulo, muchas gracias por esta entrevista y tu interés en Irdorath.
«The Final Sin» significa mucho para mí, porque, por un lado, es el final de nuestra trilogía sobre el cuento de hadas de Jesucristo y los falsos dogmas que la Biblia nos dice, o mejor dicho, a quienes todavía cree en eso. Realmente creemos que encontramos un buen acabado de ese tema y ahora podemos centrarnos en nuevos temas.
Por otro lado, se acumuló mucha pasión y trabajo en ese disco. Estoy orgulloso del producto. Creo que con cada álbum, especialmente con «The Final Sin», nos acercamos a la música que realmente queremos tocar.
2. ¿Por qué «collapse» como el nombre del álbum?
M .: No estoy muy seguro de cómo responder eso. «The Final Sin» es, como se dijo antes, la última parte de nuestra trilogía que comenzamos en «I Am Risen»
Escribimos sobre un análisis crítico y cínico y una reflexión sobre la religión, el cristianismo y la miseria que la humanidad trae sobre sí misma y sobre el mundo.
«El pecado final» en nuestro concepto es el último golpe del Cristo renacido para borrar lo divino y, con eso, le da a la humanidad otra oportunidad de actuar mejor en el futuro, sin el engaño de una creencia falsa y la corrupción de las instituciones llamadas la iglesia católica u otras confesiones.
Termina y redondea nuestra trilogía. «The Final Sin» … El fin de un dios falso y creer.
3. Un vídeo muy impactante de Debaptized, con mucha sangre y sensualidad, ¿de quién fue la idea? ¿Has tenido problemas para emitirlo?
Gracias, esa fue nuestra ambición. La idea fue reunida especialmente por mí y Thomas, nuestro baterista. Los dos somos el centro de casi todo en Irdorath.
Intentamos hacer un vídeo con tantos estereotipos como sea posible, jaja. Pero la historia es una representación exagerada de la palabra (de alguna manera creada por uno mismo) «De-baptized«. Siempre hacemos esa producción por nuestra cuenta y algunas manos de ayuda. El objetivo es dar una idea de los temas líricos, así como capturar la energía de las canciones. Espero que hayamos hecho un buen trabajo con eso.
Sé que estamos caminando sobre hielo delgado con ese vídeo, pero no escribimos música para niños. Pero sí, en YouTube tuvimos que incluir el «botón de adultos», y no podemos promocionarlo en todas partes, pero eso no nos importa, ¡lo sabíamos antes y no queríamos censurarlo todo!
4. Muy divertido el vídeo de – Chains Of Virtue (Vídeo oficial de estudio) y la escena del gato que realmente me gustó. Una gran idea son las imágenes de estudio.
Jaja gracias. Intentamos mostrar el otro lado de nosotros. Hacer música, trabajar en el estudio, etc. es, por supuesto, mucho trabajo duro, pero siempre tienes cosas divertidas. Enseñamos, ¿por qué no mostrarlos? También me gustan mucho los vídeos / imágenes de estudio. Siempre estoy interesado en cómo actúan los miembros de la banda, cuando no posan en el escenario o se comportan de la manera más seria posible … ¡todos somos seres humanos con lados diferentes!
El gato, no eres el único que le gusta, jaja. Es el gato del dueño del estudio donde grabamos guitarras, bajos y voces. Somos amigos ahora (con el gato).
5. Un álbum clásico de black metal; puro y agresivo como lo fue al principio. Esa forma de expresarlo, me gustó. ¿Cómo definirías este nuevo álbum?
Diría que es una especie de nuestra mezcla de black y thrash metal que evolucionó en los últimos 15 años. No me gusta pensar demasiado en las fronteras, la música que creo es más intuitiva, así es como me gusta crear canciones. Como fanático del metal, siempre amé la atmósfera y las melodías del black metal y el ataque y la energía del viejo thrash metal. Pero también escucho casi todos los otros géneros y música de metal. Me resulta difícil describirlo en palabras, es música, ¡escúchalo y decide si te gusta lo que hacemos!
6. Los teclados, orquestas, coros y configuraciones son positivos en todos los estilos, pero a veces también es agradable escuchar el estilo en su base más primitiva y clásica. ¿Cuál es tu opinión?
Sí, también escucho algunas bandas que trabajan mucho con la orquesta, etc. Pero no es lo que quiero hacer, especialmente no en una situación en vivo. Lo que realmente me gusta es la energía y el sonido que provienen de los instrumentos de «rock clásico»; así que guitarras, bajo, voz y batería, nada más. Para mí, como músico, el desafío más interesante es ser creativo con esas posibilidades simples.
Por supuesto, usamos algunas orquestas, teclas y demás para introducciones e interludios, pero para nuestras canciones, no quiero agregar mucho. Debe mantenerse puro y también posible tocar en vivo sin demasiada ayuda de la técnica moderna.
Pero respeto a las bandas que usan esas posibilidades, siempre y cuando sea honesto y bien hecho. Hoy es bastante fácil hacer música con un enfoque técnico, pero escribir canciones y apegarse a un estilo y evolucionarlo a lo largo de los años y muchos álbumes es algo totalmente diferente.
Lo único que no me gusta es que, cuando las bandas intentan cubrir su falta de ideas con teclados simples, es molesto.
7. Me atrajo el álbum, la fuerza que imprime, que es muy directo y viene sin elementos adicionales, como en los primeros días del estilo. ¿Te sientes más cómodo así?
Muchas gracias. Sí, como mencioné antes, así es como creo música. Debe sentirse hecho a mano y no desde una máquina o computadora. Yo como persona, como guitarrista y vocalista, quiero tener siempre la posibilidad de decir: Sí, ese soy yo; mi guitarra, mis manos y mi estilo de canto; no es un buen programa en una computadora … ¡y a más tardar lo ves y aquí está en el escenario!
8. ¿Alguna canción que te dificultó grabarla o terminarla?
Eso es fácil: no!
Thomas y yo tuvimos un período de trabajo muy intenso antes de ingresar a los estudios. Hemos estado bien preparados debido a las pre-producciones y ya terminamos las canciones antes de tocar la primera nota en el estudio.
Lo que siempre es estresante es el proceso de mezcla; nunca se sabe si el resultado final cumplirá con sus expectativas. Pero ahora puedo decir, ¡estamos muy orgullosos de ese registro y satisfechos!
9. Y en consecuencia, ¿tienes una canción con la que te sientas más cómodo?
La respuesta anterior puede llevar a la conclusión de que nuevamente digo que no, pero esa no es toda la verdad. Por supuesto que me gustan más las canciones, especialmente para tocar en vivo. Pero en general, me gustan todas las nuevas canciones.
10. ¿Quién lleva el peso de la banda? ¿las letras? ¿la música? ¿O todos lo componen juntos?
La música, las letras y la mayoría de las ideas provienen de Thomas (batería) y de mí. Normalmente escribo riffs y canciones y trabajamos todo el tiempo hasta que ambos estemos satisfechos. Luego escribimos las letras juntas, lo que a veces cambia la canción nuevamente. Así que muchos de ida y vuelta hasta que se termina una canción.
Mario (bajo) a veces da algunas ideas, pero el 99 por ciento proviene de Thomas y yo. Craig es «solo» un guitarrista en vivo.
11. ¿Tus bandas favoritas? ¿Y cuál ha sido el más influyente?
Esto es realmente difícil de responder, porque, especialmente cuando era joven, escuchaba mucha música diferente, la mayoría en los géneros de metal. Nunca tuve esa banda favorita, para ser honesto.
Definitivamente hubo bandas como Sodom, Destruction, Mayhem, (old) Behemoth, Vader u Hate que me influenciaron en el pasado y todavía están allí. Pero bandas como Iced Earth, Slayer, Immortal, así como el black metal underground alemán, fueron definitivamente motivaciones para comenzar una banda.
12. ¿Con qué banda comenzaste a conocer este estilo y el gusto por el metal en general?
Maldición, aún más difícil. Cuando lo recuerdo, tenía alrededor de 13 o 14 años, mis primeros shows en vivo fueron Deep Purple y The Rolling Stones; mi padre fue conmigo allí. Eso me influyó para escuchar «música rock». Después mi gusto fue cada vez más en el género de metal. Las primeras bandas allí fueron Iced Earth, Immortal, In Flames, etc. Más tarde, cuando comenzamos la banda, había mucho black metal underground. Cada vez más, también comencé a meterme realmente en las bandas polacas como Vader, Hate, …
13. ¿Algo más para los lectores españoles y latinos en general?

- What does this fifth album mean to you?
M.: Hi Paulo, thank you very much for this interview and your interest in Irdorath!
“The Final Sin” means a lot to me, because, on the one hand, it is the end of our trilogie about the fairytale of Jesus Christ and the false dogmas that the bible tells us, or better to say, tells those who still believe in that. We really believe that we found a good finishing of that topic and can now focus on new issues.
On the other hand a lot of passion and work went in that record. I am proud of the product. I think,that with every album, especially with “The Final Sin”, we get closer to the music that we really want to play.
- Why «collapse» as the name of the album?
M.: I am not quite sure how to answer that. “The Final Sin” is, as said before, the last part of our trilogy that we started on “I Am Risen”
We write about a critical and cynical analysis and reflection about religion, Christianity and the misery that humanity brings over themself and the world.
“The Final Sin” in our concept is the last strike of the reborn Christ to erase the divine and with that, gives the humankind another chance to act better in the future, without the mislead of a false believe and the corruption of the institutions called the catholic church or other confessions.
It ends and rounds up our trilogy. “The Final Sin” … The end of a false god and believe.
A very striking video of Debaptized, with a lot of blood and sensuality, whose idea was it? Have you had trouble issuing it?
Thank you, that was our ambition. The idea was brought together especially by me and Thomas, our drummer. We two are the centre of almost everything in Irdorath.
We tried to make a video with as much stereotypes as possivble, haha. But the story is exxegarated portrayal of the (somehow selfe-created) word “De-baptized”. We always do those production on our own and some helping hands. The goal is to give a picture of the lyrical issues, as well as capturing of the energy of the songs. I hope we did a good job with that.
I know that we are walking on thin ice with that video, but we do not write music for kids. But yes, on youtube we had to include the “adult button”, and we cannot promote it everywhere, but that does not matter to us, we knew that before and did not want to censore everything!
- Very funny the video of – Chains Of Virtue (Official Studio Video) and the cat scene I really liked. A great idea is studio images.
Haha thank you. We tried to show the other side of us. Making music, studio work and so on is of course a lot of hard work, but you always have funny stuations. We thaught, why not showing them! I also like studio videos / images very much. I am always interested in how band members act, when they are not posing on stage or behaving as serious as possible… we are all human beings with different sides!
The cat, you are not the only one who likes her, haha. It is the cat of the studio owner where wer recorded guitars, bass and vocals. We are friends now (with the cat).
- A classic black metal; pure and aggressive as it was in the beginning. That way of expressing it, I liked it. How would you define this new album?
I would say it is some kind of our mix of black and thrash metal that evolved over the last 15 years. I do not like to think too much in borders, the music that I create is more intuitive, it is how I like to create songs. I as a metal fan always loved the atmosphere and melodies of black metal and the attack and energy of old thrash metal. But I also listen to almost every other metal genres and music. I find it hard to describe it in words, it is music, listen to it and decide, if you like what we do!
- The keyboards, orchestras, choirs and settings are positive in every style, but sometimes it is also pleasant to hear the style in its most primitive, classic base. What is your opinion?
Yes, I also listen to some bands that work a lot with orchestra and so on. But it is not what I want to do, especially not in a live situation. What I really like is the energy and sound that comes from the “classic rock” instruments; so guitars, bass, vocals and drums, no more. For me as a musician that is the most interesting challenge is to be creative with that simple possibilities.
Of course we use some orchestras, keys and so for intros and interludes, but for our songs, I do not want to add much. It should stay pure and also possible to play live without too much help of modern technique.
But I respect bands that use that possibilites, as long as it is honest and well done. Today it is quite easy to make music on a technical approach, but writing songs and sticking to a style and evolving it over years and many albums is something total different.
The only thing I do not like is, when bands try to cover their lack of ideas under simple keyboards, that is annoying.
- I was attracted by the album, the force it prints, which is very direct and comes without additional additions, as in the early days of the style. Do you feel more comfortable like this?
Thank you very much. Yes, as I mentioned before, that is how I create music. It should feel handmade and not from a machine or computer. I as a person, as a guitarist and vocalist want to have always the possibility to say: Yes, thats me; my guitar, my hands and my style of singing; not a good program on a computer… and at the latest you see and here it on stage!
- Any song that made it difficult for you to record or finish it?
That is easy: no!
Thomas and I had a very intense working period before entering studios. We have been good prepared because of preprductions and already finished the songs before playing the first note in studio.
What is always nerve racking ist the mixing process; you never know if the final result will meet your expectation. But now I can say, we are very proud of that record and satisfied!
- And consequently, do you have a song with which you feel more comfortable?
The answer before may lead to the conclusion, that I again say no, but that is not the whole truth. Of course I like songs more, especially to play live. But all in all I like all of the new songs.
- Who carries the weight of the band? the letters? the music? Or do you all compose it together?
The music, lyrics and most of the ideas around come from Thomas (drums) and me. Normally I write riffs and songs and we work as long on them until we both are satisfied. Then we write the lyrics together, what changes sometimes the song again. So a lot of back and forth until a song is finished.
Mario (bass) sometimes gives some ideas, but 99 percent comes from Thomas and me. Craig is “only” a live guitarist.
- Your favorite bands? And which has been the most influential?
This is really hard to answer, because, especially when I was a youngster, I listened to a lot of different music, most in the metal genres. I never had THAT favourite band, to be honest.
Definitively there were bands like Sodom, Destruction, Mayhem, (old) Behemoth, Vader or Hate that influenced me in the past and are still there. But bands like Iced Earth, Slayer, Immortal as well as German underground black metal were definitively motivations, to start a band.
- With which band did you start to know this style and the taste for metal in general?
Damn, still harder. When I think back, I was around 13 or 14, my first live shows were Deep Purple and The Rolling Stones; my father went with me there. That influenced me to listen to “rock music”. Afterwards my taste went more and more in the metal genre. The first bands back there were Iced Earth, Immortal, In Flames and so on. Later, at the time we started the band, a lot of underground black metal was present. More and more I also started to really get into the Polish bands like Vader, Hate,…
