Inspired by the themes of love and time, South African rock singer-songwriter Ross Harding is back with ‘Love & Time’ as the first single from his upcoming EP ‘Chapter II’. Q) As an artist who creates and performs music solo and with a band, how important is it to have a versatile command of various genes and styles, such as blues and rock, and do you have any personal preferences?
A: I believe that as a musician and performer, one must constantly work to improve one’s ability. I’ve studied rock music, blues music, I’m obsessed with the guitar. I believe that having knowledge of different musical styles is valuable as it allows for a broader view of music in general, but it is extremely important to focus on one’s own music and craft. Q) Looking back at the greats of the past, who inspired you the most to become the artist you are today and what have you incorporated the most from their contribution into your own style and offering?

A: “Chapter II” is a rock/blues rock/grungy/hard rock piece of art that I feel people will be able to relate to in a variety of ways. It’s dark enough to be cathartic, but not as forgiving as «Rest & Resurrection.» It’s emotional, emotional at times, there’s aggression, but it’s also nice and soft in parts. I feel like fans of all kinds of rock music will enjoy this EP. Song structures are more solid; plus having worked with a producer and designing all the tones beforehand makes the EP so much more cohesive and rich. In the music video for «Black Sun Blues» (which is a darker take on the traditional 12-bar blues song format), we opted for a behind-the-scenes style video to give fans an insight into the studio process and introduce new fans. music. The EP has been a growth process for me. Every time I record something in the studio, I am gaining knowledge and experience about my own music, but about music in general. I think «Chapter» II is a big step closer to the music I want to create and share with people.
Q) Give us some ideas about your ideation and creation process. How do you create the magic that is a Ross Harding track?
A: The creation process never really stops for me. I’m perpetually recording demos and ideas. They can happen when I’m playing the guitar, listening to something, watching something. Creative ideas can come from many places, emotions, experiences, dreams.
When something really moves me, I write or record the idea and build more from there. It often starts with a guitar part or a melody. The music mainly dictates the lyrics to me. I try to paint what I have in mind on the page, or with my instrument or my voice.
P) As a full-time artist, what are the most important lessons you can share with new artists with the same ambition to make a living from their art?
A:
Be brave, the road is hard. Have faith and stay true to your art. Take pride in yourself as a musician. Learn from your peers. Don’t be afraid to do what you need to do to pay the bills. I have failed a lot along the way and I have also made great strides. Try to learn what is happening in the industry and use it to your advantage whenever you can.
Q) What do you have on your radar, beyond the release of your next singles and EPs? What do you have planned for the near future?
