A Magnum le pilló la epidemia de coronavirus de lleno. Su magistral The Serpent Rings no pudo presentarse en directo. Otros habrían esperado a que pasara tormenta. Tony Clarkin se puso manos a la obra para marcarse un nuevo disco que ahora te comentamos.
«The Monster Roars» abre el fuego con la elegancia marca de la casa. La armonía de Bob con los teclados le da paso a un medio tiempo que va creciendo poco a poco. La producción es bastante básica y Catley confirma que es uno de los mejores cantantes de hard rock de la historia. Enorme de principio a fin. «Remember» nos muestra un sonido más de los 80, desde que la voz rompe la melodía solo se presagia lo mejor. Entra el bombo, la guitarra se va cargando de energía y todo termina explotando en un corte made in Magnum que te conquistará a la primera.
«All You Believe In» incluye un juego muy interesante entre la voz de Bob y la guitarra de Tony. No tarda en llegar la energía y tampoco en confirmarse que este medio tiempo lo tiene todo para quedarse en tus oídos durante meses. «I Won’t Let You Down» fue el primer single del disco. Dicen que suena a la ELO y que se esperaba más, pero tiene su punto. «The Present Not the Past» le saca el máximo partido a una producción excelsa que te lleva a pensar que el grupo está tocando en tu habitación. Es una de esas gemas que la banda incluye en sus discos y que va creciendo con el tiempo. El estribillo es una clase magistral de hard rock melódico.
«No Steppin’ Stones» fue el segundo single y pegó bastante fuerte. Otra melodía agradable que tiene múltiples matices por descubrir. «That Freedom Word» comienza con la guitarra de Tony y con un Bob que vuelve a apoyarse en los teclados para que la canción vaya cogiendo forma. Tras unos versos así lo hace, otro de los cortes más potentes del álbum con todo lo que se le exige a Magnum.
«Blood is Violence» le da su sitio a los teclados desde el principio, pero sin olvidarse de un riff de metal clásico que te martillea la cabeza. Recuerda ligeramente a los Black Sabbath de Ozzy Osbourne, pero con todos los referentes del sonido del grupo que nos ocupa. Imprescindible. «Walk the Silent Hours» es el clásico medio tiempo, pero con tintes progresivos y con distintos cambios de ritmo lo que contribuye a que se valore su indudable valor artístico.
«The Day After the Night Before» empieza duro y a la encía. No hay tregua y no te permite que te relajes. Nos sigue sorprendiendo que el grupo mantenga ese filo cortante y esa magnífica manera de trabajar la melodía. No debería faltar en los conciertos del grupo. «Come Holy Men» es uno de esos cortes que Tony suele componer para marcar la diferencia con el resto del disco. Bob trabaja en registros más altos de lo habitual y el resultado no puede ser más positivo. «Can’t Buy Yourself a Heaven» cierra el disco y una vez más se apuesta por el medio tiempo con líneas melódicas impresionantes. No hay mejor punto final.
Que tras décadas de rock tengan las ganas de seguir grabando discos ya es un logro. Y más todavía que cada trabajo suponga subir el listón un poco más y exigirse lo máximo. Puede resultar cansino, pero es que han vuelto a marcarse una obra maestra que te dejará con ganas de escucharla una y otra vez. Será uno de los mejores discos del año con total seguridad.

«The Monster Roars» opens the fire with the trademark elegance of the house. Bob’s harmony with the keyboards gives way to a mid-tempo that grows little by little. The production is pretty basic and Catley confirms that he is one of the best hard rock singers ever. Huge from start to finish. «Remember» shows us a more 80’s sound, since the voice breaks the melody only the best is foreshadowed. The bass drum enters, the guitar is charged with energy and everything ends up exploding in a cut made in Magnum that will conquer you at first.
«All You Believe In» includes a very interesting game between Bob’s voice and Tony’s guitar. It doesn’t take long for the energy to arrive and it doesn’t take long for it to be confirmed that this half-time has everything to stay in your ears for months. «I Won’t Let You Down» was the first single from the album. They say it sounds like the ELO and that more was expected, but it has its point. «The Present Not the Past» makes the most of a lofty production that makes you think the group is playing in your bedroom. It’s one of those gems that the band includes on their albums and that grows over time. The chorus is a masterclass in melodic hard rock.
«No Steppin’ Stones» was the second single and it hit pretty hard. Another nice melody that has multiple nuances to discover. «That Freedom Word» begins with Tony’s guitar and Bob leaning back on the keyboards as the song takes shape. After a few verses he does so, another of the most powerful cuts on the album with everything that is required of Magnum.
«Blood is Violence» gives keyboards their place from the start, but without forgetting a classic metal riff that hammers your head. It is slightly reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne’s Black Sabbath, but with all the sound references of the group in question. Essential. «Walk the Silent Hours» is the classic mid-tempo, but with progressive overtones and different rhythm changes, which contributes to its undoubted artistic value.
«The Day After the Night Before» starts off hard and to the gums. There is no respite and it does not allow you to relax. It continues to surprise us that the group maintains that cutting edge and that magnificent way of working the melody. It should not be missing in the concerts of the group. «Come Holy Men» is one of those cuts that Tony usually writes to make a difference with the rest of the album. Bob works at higher registers than usual and the result could not be more positive. «Can’t Buy Yourself a Heaven» closes the album and once again bets on half time with impressive melodic lines. There is no better end point.
That after decades of rock they have the desire to continue recording albums is already an achievement. And even more so that each job involves raising the bar a little more and demanding the maximum. It may be tiresome, but they have once again created a masterpiece that will leave you wanting to listen to it over and over again. It will be one of the best albums of the year for sure.
