Crítica Grave Digger – Fields of Blood. 40 años de carrera va a cumplir Chris Boltendahl y los suyos con Grave Digger, una banda que quizá siempre ha estado en segundo plano pero que nunca ha dejado de aparecer en grandes festivales, con multitudinarios conciertos y álbumes magistrales como fue “Tunes of War”, por ejemplo.

Quienes nos acercamos a los discos de Grave Digger sabemos a lo que nos enfrentamos, y nos gusta. He de confesar que les perdí la pista hace tiempo, concretamente desde “Rheingold”, pero me pongo las primeras notas de la intro de “Fields of Blood” y tengo esa sensación de reencontrarte con un viejo amigo, que pese a no haberlo visto en casi dos décadas sigue tal y como lo recordabas.

El nuevo disco consta de 12 temas y es su tercera obra conceptual sobre la historia escocesa, tras “Tunes of War” y “The Clans Will March Again”. La portada como no podía ser de otra forma, desprende épica y guerra por los cuatro costados (pese a que alguno pueda considerar demasiado infantiles las representaciones de William Wallace).

Como introducción podríamos decir que es un disco bastante asequible para los oídos, sin demasiadas ornamentaciones innecesarias. Si escuchamos los dos primeros temas tras la intro, el single “All for the kingdom” y “Lions of the sea”, tenemos sobre todo en esta segunda una canción clásica para corear en conciertos, con un estribillo coral pomposo y pegadizo que a mí me ha enganchado de sobremanera.
La voz de Chris sigue alternando entre la tesitura rasgada y más limpia en los coros, aspecto que siempre ha caracterizado al grupo. Las producciones de Grave Digger, tienen ya su sello propio pero siempre pienso que podrían sonar aún más contundentes (a lo Accept) aunque quizá no sea lo buscado por la banda.

Es curioso que tras tantos años de carrera, no hubieran sacado una canción con un título que tanto le va a sus historias como es “Freedom”. Aquí nos ofrecen su lado más reivindicativo con un rápido riff y la batería machacando la caja de una manera casi programada.

Las gaitas son parte intrínseca del sonido celta en general y de Grave Digger en particular, y además de en la intro se usan para canciones como “Heart of Scotland”, un medio tiempo con una base musical bastante sencilla y donde las voces evocan al sentimiento patriótico (en el buen sentido) de defensa de Escocia (siendo ellos alemanes). Por mantener la historia, esta canción es continuada por otro tema de tempo lento, “Thousand Tears” donde colabora Noora, cantante de Battle Beast. La canción no está mal, y para las obras conceptuales seguramente es necesario unir este tipo de temas, pero para el oyente más metalero puede hacerle perder el foco si no está atento a las letras.

El puro sonido Grave Digger vuelve con “Union of the Crown”, otra de mis favoritas, donde se mezcla un clásico ritmo de base rítmica y el estribillo acompañado del doble bombo. Su gusto por Iron Maiden, no pueden ocultarlo en “My Final Fight” con ese inicio cabalgando tan característico y otra canción donde el título de la canción sirve para repetirse una y otra vez en el estribillo hasta hacer que se inserte en la cabeza de los oyentes.

Por hablar de otras canciones, destacaré el estribillo en tonos altos de “Gathering of the Clans”, con las gaitas sustituyendo los tradicionales solos de guitarra, o la extensa “Fields of Blood”, de más de 10 minutos donde los pasajes acústicos se entremezclan con coros a lo Jethro Tull, y un épico final con toda la banda tocando a buen volumen rematando el título inicial que da también nombre al disco.

Me alegro haber vuelto a escuchar a los alemanes, contándonos nuevas leyendas y mitos de Escocia. Musicalmente nos traen exactamente lo que uno podía esperar, algunos temas muy pegadizos, toques celtas, un Chris que sigue en forma, y una banda que en mi opinión sigue manteniendo a buen nivel la historia del grupo. Felicidades por estos 40 años.

Review Grave Digger – Fields of Blood. 40 years of career will celebrate Chris Boltendahl and his with Grave Digger, a band that perhaps has always been in the background but has never stopped appearing at major festivals, with massive concerts and master albums such as «Tunes of War» , for example.

Those of us who approach the Grave Digger records know what we are dealing with, and we like it. I must confess that I lost track of them a long time ago, specifically since «Rheingold», but I wear the first notes of the intro to «Fields of Blood» and I have the feeling of meeting you again with an old friend, who despite not having seen him in almost two decades continues as you remembered it.

The new album consists of 12 songs and is his third conceptual work on Scottish history, after «Tunes of War» and «The Clans Will March Again». The cover, as it could not be otherwise, gives off epic and war on all four sides (although some may consider the representations of William Wallace too childish).

As an introduction we could say that it is a fairly affordable album for the ears, without too many unnecessary ornamentation. If we listen to the first two songs after the intro, the single “All for the kingdom” and “Lions of the sea”, we especially have in this second one a classic song to sing in concerts, with a pompous and catchy choral chorus that to me It has really hooked me.
Chris’s voice continues to alternate between the torn and cleaner tessitura in the choirs, an aspect that has always characterized the group. The Grave Digger productions already have their own label but I always think that they could sound even more forceful (a la Accept) although it may not be what the band wanted.

It is curious that after so many years of career, they had not released a song with a title that suits their stories as much as «Freedom». Here they offer us their most vindictive side with a fast riff and the battery pounding the box in an almost programmed way.

Bagpipes are an intrinsic part of the Celtic sound in general and Grave Digger in particular, and in addition to the intro they are used for songs like “Heart of Scotland”, a halftime with a fairly simple musical base and where the voices evoke the feeling patriotic (in a good way) defending Scotland (being they German). To keep the story going, this song is continued by another slow-tempo track, «Thousand Tears» featuring Noora, lead singer of Battle Beast. The song is not bad, and for conceptual works it is surely necessary to unite these types of themes, but for the most metal listener it can make them lose focus if they are not attentive to the lyrics.

The pure Grave Digger sound returns with “Union of the Crown”, another of my favorites, where a classic rhythmic base rhythm and the chorus are mixed with the double bass drum. Their taste for Iron Maiden, they cannot hide it in “My Final Fight” with that beginning riding so characteristic and another song where the title of the song serves to repeat itself over and over again in the chorus until it is inserted into the heads of the listeners.

For speaking of other songs, I will highlight the chorus in high tones of «Gathering of the Clans», with the bagpipes replacing the traditional guitar solos, or the extensive «Fields of Blood», of more than 10 minutes where the acoustic passages intermingle with Jethro Tull-style backing vocals, and an epic finale with the entire band playing loudly topping the opening title that also gives the album its name.

I am glad to have listened to the Germans again, telling us new Scottish legends and myths. Musically they bring us exactly what one could expect, some very catchy songs, Celtic touches, a Chris that is still in shape, and a band that in my opinion continues to maintain the history of the group at a good level. Congratulations on these 40 years.
