Crítica Alestorm – Curse of the Crystal Coconut.
Los piratas más famosos del heavy metal (con permiso de Running Wild), Alestorm, vuelven con todo el furor y animosidad que demuestran desde que aquél lejano “Drink” causara sensación por todos los lugares del mundo.

En el Leyendas del Rock 2019 fue una de las bandas que más seguidores aglutinaron, demostrando que justamente España es un lugar donde son especialmente bien recibidos. Su nuevo disco, “Curse of the Crystal Coconut”, es otro gran ejemplo de diversión, fiesta y por qué no, potencia, donde Christopher Bowes y los suyos incluso recuerdan a bandas como Ensiferum en algunos pasajes.

En este tipo de grupos, es fundamental que las canciones tengan gancho, que los seguidores puedan corear en directo y canturrear en el coche mientras suenan, y eso pasa ineludiblemente con el tema que abre el disco, “Treasure Chest Party Quest”. Me parece una gran elección de apertura, ya que aúna un estribillo extenso y pegadizo con ritmos festivos y una producción muy clara y trabajada, como sucede también con uno de los singles, “Fannybows”, donde la repetición del título no solo la tenemos en el estribillo sino en el bridge a dos voces donde en diferentes tesituras van desplegando el nombre, imaginando ya cómo sería la puesta en escena del tema en los, esperemos, futuros conciertos de la banda. En el disco, además de los clásicos instrumentos de rock tenemos flautas, violines o trombones, y eso da siempre un aire incluso juglaresco a la propuesta del grupo.

Un inicio a doble bombo y algo más agresiva es “Chomp Chomp”, donde el sonido de la base rítmica es de lo más interesante del disco. Por curiosa y diversa tengo que destacar “Tortuga”, que seguramente causará tanto críticas como alabanzas. En esta canción, tenemos un inicio tribal con un ritmo jamaicano y unas voces rapeando de Captain Yarrface, pero cuando parecía que el tema era simplemente eso, cambian y nos ofrecen un estribillo hardrockero a dos voces brillante. Os recomiendo que la escuchéis entera para no dejaros llevar por las primeras impresiones. La canción más “extrema” podría ser “Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship” pero en cuanto parecía que estábamos con Finntroll llega Patty Gurdy para aportar con su melódica y limpia voz femenina, un contraste de nuevo inesperado.

El power metal pirata llega con “Call of the waves”, el clásico tema Alestorm sin más pretensiones que dotar de algo más tradicional al disco. Otro de los singles escogidos por la banda es el noveno tema, “Pirate Metal Drinking Crew” que sigue el patrón del inicio con un pegadizo estribillo coral

Cierra el disco, “Henry Martin” un medio tiempo a lo Blind Guardian que sirve para bajar las emociones encontradas en los 10 temas anteriores.

Alestorm han firmado en mi opinión uno de los mejores discos de su carrera. Variado, con muchas colaboraciones, bien producido y transmitiendo el buen rollo que solo ellos saben. ¡Enhorabuena, piratas!

Review Alestorm – Curse of the Crystal Coconut.

The most famous heavy metal pirates (with permission from Running Wild), Alestorm, return with all the fury and animosity that they show since that distant “Drink” caused a sensation in all parts of the world.

At Leyendas del Rock 2019 he was one of the bands that gathered the most followers, showing that Spain is precisely a place where they are especially well received. Their new album, «Curse of the Crystal Coconut», is another great example of fun, party and why not, power, where Christopher Bowes and his people even remember bands like Ensiferum in some passages.

In this type of group, it is essential that the songs have a hook, that the followers can sing live and hum in the car while they sound, and that inevitably happens with the song that opens the album, «Treasure Chest Party Quest». It seems to me a great opening choice, since it combines an extensive and catchy chorus with festive rhythms and a very clear and elaborate production, as also happens with one of the singles, «Fannybows», where the repetition of the title is not only in the chorus but in the two-voice bridge where the name is displayed in different tessitura, already imagining how the staging of the theme would be in the, hopefully, future concerts of the band. On the album, in addition to the classic rock instruments we have flutes, violins or trombones, and that always gives an even juggled air to the group’s proposal.

A double kick start and somewhat more aggressive is «Chomp Chomp», where the sound of the rhythmic base is the most interesting of the album. For curious and diverse I have to highlight «Tortuga», which will surely cause both criticism and praise. In this song, we have a tribal start with a Jamaican beat and rapming vocals from Captain Yarrface, but when it seemed like the theme was just that, they switch and offer us a brilliant two-voice hardrock chorus. I recommend that you listen to it in its entirety so as not to get carried away by first impressions. The most «extreme» song could be «Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship» but as soon as it seemed that we were with Finntroll Patty Gurdy arrives to contribute with her melodic and clean feminine voice, a new unexpected contrast.

Pirate power metal arrives with “Call of the waves”, the classic Alestorm theme with no more pretensions to give the album something more traditional. Another of the singles chosen by the band is the ninth song, «Pirate Metal Drinking Crew» that follows the pattern of the beginning with a catchy choral chorus

The album, «Henry Martin» closes a half-time Blind Guardian that serves to lower the emotions found in the previous 10 songs.

Alestorm have signed in my opinion one of the best albums of her career. Varied, with many collaborations, well produced and transmitting the good vibes that only they know. Congratulations pirates!
