Crítica – DAN BROOKLYN – «The Great Beast» – SAOL

Dan Brooklyn decidió, hace algún tiempo, dedicarle un disco a la vida de Aleister Crowley. Desde niño estuvo en contacto con las prácticas ocultistas del antedicho y es, precisamente, en el septuagésimo quinto aniversario de su muerte cuando se edita este trabajo conceptual con toques de metalcore y sonido industrial. Le ayudó en la composición y grabación del disco Caleb Bingham, otrora en Five finger death punch.

Comenta Brooklyn que tras estudiar en Metal Factory en Holanda y haber sido el batería de Athanasia en algunas giras, la idea es  conseguir que la gente entienda que Crowley era «un pionero de la libertad de expresión cuya cara real era imposible de reconocer». También deja la duda entre si el personaje era un adicto al sexo y un narcisista o un simple libertino que sembró la simiente para la llegada del movimiento hippy.

En lo musical destacamos cortes como «The equinox of the gods», «The mass of the phoenix» o «Chamber of nightmares». A lo largo del disco hay diversos fragmentos de transición y la atmósfera general recuerda bastante a una mezcla de Slayer, Fear Factory y los grupos de death técnico más actuales. cierra el disco una versión del clásico «Mr. Crowley» de Ozzy Osbourne.

La obra está muy trabajada y el resultado cumple con las expectativas. De ti depende disfrutarla.

Dan Brooklyn decided, some time ago, to dedicate an album to the life of Aleister Crowley. Since he was a child he was in contact with the occult practices of the aforementioned and it is precisely on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his death that this conceptual work with touches of metalcore and industrial sound is released. He helped him write and record the album Caleb Bingham, formerly of Five finger death punch.

Brooklyn comments that after studying at the Metal Factory in the Netherlands and having been Athanasia’s drummer on some tours, the idea is to get people to understand that Crowley was «a pioneer of freedom of expression whose real face was impossible to recognize.» He also leaves the question as to whether the character was a sex addict and a narcissist or a simple libertine who sowed the seeds for the coming of the hippy movement.

Musically, we highlight cuts like «The equinox of the gods», «The mass of the phoenix» or «Chamber of nightmares». Throughout the album there are various transitional bits and the general atmosphere is quite reminiscent of a mix of Slayer, Fear Factory and the latest technical death bands. The album closes with a version of the classic «Mr. Crowley» by Ozzy Osbourne.

The work is very worked and the result meets expectations. It’s up to you to enjoy it.
