Devilskin combina el rock y el metal con mucha pasión

Devilskin, la agrupación de Hamilton, Nueva Zelandia formada en 2010, edita su tercer trabajo denominado Red y en el cual podemos encontrar 12 temas que enmarcan de la mejor manera su pasión por el rock y le metal en una combinación única, apoyada sobre todo en la prodigiosa voz de Jennie Skulander, la sólida base rítmica de Paul, Nail y Nic y que la banda lleva unida desde prácticamente su formación con lo cual han conseguido crear un núcleo sólido de estabilidad y amistad que a al postre se ve reflejado en su trabajo y por tanto en sus temas.

Red es por lo tanto un paso más en la madurez propia de la banda en seguir consolidando un sonido propio que ya posee miles de seguidores por todo el mundo. Sin duda uno de los puntos fuertes del disco en general es la vehemencia que la banda aporta a cada uno de su nuevos temas, consiguiendo con ello un disco variado, lleno de texturas e interesante a la hora de escuchar, ya no solo para sus múltiples seguidores, sino también para aquellos que se acerquen por primera vez a su sonido.

Es meritorio el grato balance vocal que realiza Skulander a lo largo del disco en algunos cortes dotándolos de una fuerza extra mezclando con ello su voz limpia con otra más gutural y extrema. Ejemplo de ello lo tenemos en la inicial «Do You See Birds» que arranca con su voz más extrema y unos gratos acordes. Una canción fuerte, para entrar de lleno en su nueva dinámica. «All Fall Down» nos presenta un tema más en su línea habitual de su pasado, voces limpias y un solo muy sobrecogedor y de esos que marcan época. Una canción tenaz que se nos quedará grabada a fuego.

«Corrode» es el sencillo que saco la banda para dar a conocer su nueva obra y aquí encontramos una canción más lenta pero aún así con mucho peso en la batería y los acordes. Jenny cantando en voz limpia al inicio muy bien acompañada por unos coros y un puente muy sobrecogedores. Esa temática lenta o de medios tiempos nos dejará un rico sabor de boca. Luego nos encontraremos con uno de mis cortes favoritos «Eyes Red Heavy» por su estructura, una especie de balada robusta con unos acordes de guitarra de fondo muy seductores. El solo es brutal y seguro será uno de los temas que se recordarán con los años. Por las sensaciones que me transmitió me recordó a «Fade» de su disco We Rise (2014).

«Same Life» en sus inicios también me hizo rememorar al «Never See The LIght» del We Rise (2014) sobre todo por el agradable inicio con solo de bajo. Luego el corte lleva por otros senderos, con un pegadizo rifs y Jennie combinando sus voces extremas y limpias de manera brillante. Un tema muy movido y con unos teclados de fondo brillantes, sin duda otra joya del disco. El final es bestial. Me encanta el sonido del bajo en el disco y muestra de ello encontramos otra original balada con «Sweet Relax». O el vistoso inicio en «Bright Lights», siendo este un tema muy interesante lleno de curiosos detalles sonoros.

«Endo» que también posee un provocativo vídeo nos ofrece sus dos vertientes en un solo corte. Un tema muy enérgico que hará saltar a todos en sus futuros directos. Su nueva obra era muy esperada tras cuatro años y podemos estar más que satisfechos, ya que la banda nos ofrece un disco que lleva la esencia de la banda, su original sonido y sobre todo que han sabido mezclar estilos como el rock y el metal en un álbum lleno de pasión, garra y sensibilidad.

Devilskin, the group from Hamilton, New Zealand formed in 2010, publishes their third work called Red and in which we can find 12 songs that best frame their passion for rock and metal in a unique combination, supported mainly by the prodigious voice of Jennie Skulander, the solid rhythmic base of Paul, Nail and Nic and that the band has been united since practically their formation with which they have managed to create a solid core of stability and friendship that is ultimately reflected in their work and therefore in its themes.

Red is therefore one more step in the band’s own maturity in continuing to consolidate its own sound that already has thousands of followers around the world. Without a doubt one of the strengths of the album in general is the vehemence that the band brings to each of their new songs, thus achieving a varied album, full of textures and interesting when it comes to listening, not just for its multiple followers, but also for those who approach their sound for the first time.

The pleasant vocal balance that Skulander performs throughout the album in some cuts is worthy of giving them extra strength, mixing his clean voice with another more throaty and extreme. We have an example of this in the initial «Do You See Birds» that starts with its most extreme voice and pleasant chords. A strong song, to fully enter its new dynamic. «All Fall Down» presents us with one more theme in its usual line from its past, clean voices and a very overwhelming solo, and one of those that mark an era. A tenacious song that will stay with us on fire.

«Corrode» is the single that the band released to publicize their new work and here we find a slower song but still with a lot of weight on the drums and chords. Jenny singing in a clean voice at the beginning very well accompanied by some very overwhelming choirs and a bridge. That slow or part-time theme will leave us with a rich taste in the mouth. Then we will find one of my favorite cuts «Eyes Red Heavy» for its structure, a kind of robust ballad with very seductive background guitar chords. He alone is brutal and sure will be one of the themes that will be remembered over the years. From the sensations he transmitted to me, he reminded me of «Fade» from his album We Rise (2014).

«Same Life» in its beginnings also made me remember the «Never See The LIght» of the We Rise (2014) especially for the pleasant beginning with solo bass. Then the cut takes other trails, with catchy rifs and Jennie combining their extreme clean voices brilliantly. A very lively song with bright background keyboards, without a doubt another gem of the album. The end is beastly. I love the sound of the bass on the album and we can find another original ballad with «Sweet Relax». Or the showy beginning in «Bright Lights», being this a very interesting subject full of curious sound details.

«Endo», which also has a provocative video, offers us its two aspects in a single cut. A very energetic subject that will make everyone jump into their future live shows. Their new work was highly anticipated after four years and we can be more than satisfied, since the band offers us an album that carries the essence of the band, its original sound and above all that they have known how to mix styles such as rock and metal in an album full of passion, punch and sensitivity.
